Roughly 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then located many other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials report initial examinations suggest the fluid was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; authorities are presently not aware of any physical harm in connection with the event," they added.
Local authorities announced they were working "to solve the case" and have asked to the residents for details.
A senior official stated the vandalism rendered him stunned and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist attack in 2020," he stated on a platform, recalling the murder of nine people by a gunman focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
