Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
