Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to contest particular rulings made by the official, echoing the practice already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
